Modern Gang Tribal Tattoos In Japan

Tribal tattoos are associated with the Maori people, the Samoan people and the Native American people amongst others but new ìtribesî are taking tattooing to the next level. Tribal tattoos have commonly been used to symbolise status and family ties and they are being utilised in modern gang culture to do exactly that. The Yakuza of Japan are a prime example of this.

Irezumi tribal tattoos are etched into the skin using hand-poking methods, meaning that the ink is forced beneath the skin using sharpened bamboo or steel implements. This is incredibly painful so it is also a test of manhood as well as gang loyalty. They are usually full body and face tattoos so they are easily identifiable.
